General contractor
If you want to be able to erect a building or modify its structures (modification of openings, load-bearing walls, extension of buildings, etc.), you must necessarily hold a general contractor's license.
If you do not want to touch the structures of a building but nevertheless be able to manage a site as a whole and hire subcontractors (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc.), you must also in this case hold a general contractor.
Performing flips, for example, absolutely requires holding this general contractor's license.

Builder-owner
If you want to act on buildings that belong to you (other than your personal home), for example, build your income properties, renovate an apartment block that you have just acquired, you will need a general owner-builder license.
NB: The holder of an Owner-Builder license carries out or has carried out, on his property or properties, work to meet his own needs and not to make a profit from the actual execution of the construction work. In simpler terms, the Owner-Builder does not perform construction work for clients.

License modification
A license is always editable.
This means that you can start your entrepreneurial project with a specialized contractor's license and ask for it to be upgraded to that of general contractor later.
In this case, the exams you have already taken are acquired (you do not have to take them again).
You will simply have to pass one (or more) additional exams, necessary for the qualification of the chosen general contractor sub-category.
