Exam policy and results

When you submit your license application, be ready and available for your convocation because no postponement of the exam is authorized.

You will receive at your postal address, the notice of meeting indicating the date and time of the exam(s), as well as the address of the office of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) where you must go.

Be sure to observe the following rules:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before the start of the exam session.

  • Present 2 identity cards with photo and signature.

  • Leave your personal belongings such as your cell phone, pager, coat, bag or briefcase in the cloakroom before entering the exam room.

  • Leave all reference materials such as a notebook or your personal notes outside.

The RBQ provides all the material necessary to take the exam (ruler, pencil, calculator, dictionary, codes, regulations or legal texts).

*No fraudulent reproduction of exam booklets or accompanying booklets is permitted.

If any of these rules are not respected, you could be refused access to the examination room or be expelled from it. A significant delay would then be imposed on you before you can take the exam again.

Absence from an exam

If you cannot be present on the dates and at the times set in the notice of meeting, you will receive, by mail, the decision of the RBQ and the procedure to follow.

You will have 30 days following receipt of this letter to act in one of the following two ways:

  • If the purpose of the review was to change your License, you will need to complete a new change request.

  • If the exam was for the purpose of obtaining a new License, you will need to complete an abbreviated application.

In both cases, costs will be required.

What do the exam questions look like?

  • The exams consist of multiple-choice questions.

  • For each question, there is only one correct answer.

  • As the questions are multiple choice, the correction is objective.

  • Some questions may refer to scenarios with plans and specifications.

  • Some questions require reference to documents such as codes, regulations or legal texts. These documents will be lent to you on site.

Disagreement with the RBQ's decision to fail

If you want to contest your failure, you can request a review of the decision.

You will then have 30 days to do so following the date of the failure decision rendered by the RBQ to request a review.

The results of your exam

The results of the exams will be communicated to you by mail.

No results will be given over the phone.

When all your documents are in order and you have passed your Exam (60%) your License is issued.

In case of failure

From the receipt of your confirmation of failure, you have 30 days to request a retake of the exam.

Your request must be accompanied by payment for the total amount of the exam(s) to be retaken.

The RBQ will contact you to inform you of the date on which the new exam session will take place.

If you fail a supplemental exam, you cannot be re-admitted to that exam until 6 months after the date of the decision to fail.
